Architecture Students Tackling Today's Issues

This is not a hate blog, this is an opinion blog. It is important to understand that I do not intend to undermine the architecture industry, but to shed light on the problems and help tackle them.

I read this article on Dezeen about how students are let down by the architectural education cirriculum as they believe they are not prepared to tackle the climate crisis as a result of the work from people in the past.

Let me tell you honestly, we are not ready to tackle anything. The education we are being given at university needs to be changed ever so slightly to teach us what we're going to face in the real world.

We are taught how to be creative and design with little sustainable knowledge but as far as my knowledge goes one doesn't get the opportunity to showcase this creativity until one is 30-35 years older. In the meantime we are pressurised in the architecture industry expected to live to an expectation no one taught us to.

Most likely, we aren't going to be given a brief in which we work on, we will assist those who set THEIR project. We will help assist them in THEIR calculations and THEIR drawings, we aren't creating anything of our own unless we open our firm (if it can stand on its own in this case). I am not saying this is a bad thing, but to be good at our first job, I believe there needs to be some education to becoming an architectural assistant.

The architecture's education system is something I believe needs to be improved to prepare us students for the real world and today's issues. This reinforces the importance of work experience and internships to try and get an insight into the reality of architecture.

One would ask me: why are you enrolled on an architecture course if this is its reality and you don't want that?

I didn't know that until I enrolled, read, saw and witnessed the struggles that come along in the path of becoming an architect. Why would I leave it alone now that I am a part of this community? I plan on helping to improve the architecture industry if I ever get the chance to.
